May Day Rally focus in labor and immigrant issues

"Sheriff Mahoney has to step down if he keeps harassing families"

When: International Workers Day. Thursday, May First @ 11:30am

Where: From the Brittingham Park to Dane County Building

Who: All workers and Students are welcome.

Why: To better protect and improve living and working conditions of millions of workers families.

To demand Sheriff Mahoney to respect city and county policies or step down of his job.

The Immigrant Workers Union (IWU) joined the May Day Committee in Madison in September 2007 to join forces with other labor organizations. IWU states that politicians are playing a cruel game on millions of families in USA trying to create divisions where it should be unity.

Most of the 11 millions of undocumented immigrant families are workers families, most victims of the most of the abuse exploitation due their status. "Many of our stories are the same than any other low income worker family in this country, living pay check to pay check, frustrated for the lack of future for us and our kids and suffering the cut of social services…" says Hector Ordoñez from Immigrant Worker s Union.

Despite multiples studies are showing the critical role of new workers in this country, and the projected lack of labor force by 2025-2050 in USA, the US congress and senate still don't fix an overdue broken immigration system. Well at contrary, there is an ongoing war against undocumented workers around the country; using the justice system to inject fear and chaos into the daily routine of millions.

Like in Dane County, Sheriff Mahoney seems to have time and resources to make justice in his own terms. Following the most narrow and community insensitive approach, Sheriff Dave Mahoney is harassing immigrant workers both inside and outside jail. Yesterday, April 27th, IWU received a call from the wife of C.D. who being in county jail for 3 days now is in the process to be removed by ICE.

He and his wife have been working in Madison for 10 years and have 3 kids, all US born. Husband and father, D.C., has some traffic related tickets and the judge sentenced him with 3 days of jail. However and thanks to the Dave Mahoney, he was reported to ICE and now waiting for removal. "I do not know what to do; I have to survive with one salary less at home. I can not leave the country now. My kids are missing him already, now I have to explain to them why they will not see him for years,"

IWU ask to the general public for support to put an end to Sheriff Mahoney harassment.

If the law, judges and system is not enough for Mahoney, he shall run for a legislator to change the law instead use the enforcement agency to move agenda in his anti immigrant aspirations. Dave Mahoney, in a private meeting confesses that in his opinion "if ICE removes the bad apples that would build a better community for all and less work for him". Is really the case here? Who draw the line between good and bad apples? Should be the judges who draw the line according with the law?

If a head of a family of 4, honest worker, is said to go to jail for 3 days, should he fear to be deported? How does it help to build a better community? Dave Mahoney believes that bad apples should be removed on his own watch, who can trust in a justice system that is hijacked by the enforcer?

IWU demands Dane County to act immediately and stop the abuse. It is time that local government does the right thing and protects innocents from those who attempts to make sense out of harassing workers immigrant families.

The rally will start at Brittingham Park and arrive to Dane County Building where music groups and a series of speakers will closure the rally at 210 Martin Luther King.

Student Organizations in UW will organize a speak-out rally at Library Mall @10:30am this Thursday to later join the main rally at the park.

Ya ha pasado una semana desde la acción nacional del Primero de Mayo y nuestra comunidad esta pendiente de que pasara con la reforma inmigratoria. Una vez mas tuvimos una de las acciones mas grandes de la historia de este país en los últimos cincuenta años, realmente solo superada por nuestras marchas del años pasado.

Cientos de miles de inmigrantes y aliados salieron a la calle, y en la mayoría pidiendo amnistía.

El Primero de Mayo fue un gran revés para los planes del gobierno y sobre todo de los anti inmigrantes. Esperaban que con las redadas y con una propuesta de "reforma" insuficiente, este año seria mas fácil controlarnos! No fue así!  En el debate de "reforma" o "amnistía" gano la Amnistía, la mayoría de las marchas de le semana pasada cientos de miles de marchantes dejaron claro que no pedimos menos que una solución para lo mas de 12 millones de trabajadores en este país.

A pesar de las mentiras e intentos por engañar, la propuesta STRIVE o Gutiérrez ha sido rechazada por el pueblo por que en realidad ni cubre a todos los afectados, ni respeta los derechos de familia, laborales, civiles o humanos y que además es demasiada cara.

A mediados de Mayo se reintroducirá el debate inmigratorio en el senado, ahora con mayoría demócrata. Durante estos días, les pedimos que llamen a la oficina del Senador Russ Feingold  (202) 224-5323 y a la Oficina del Senador Herb Kohl (202) 224-5653 y dejen un mensaje "Vivo en Wisconsin y le pido que apoye una amnistía inmigratoria para los trabajadores inmigrantes de este país" "I life in Wisconsin, and I ask you to support an amnesty for immigrant workers in this country". De esta manera presionamos y dejamos claro que no nos engañaran con la "STRIVE".

Greenbay Los Racistas ganan terreno

En Geen Bay han propuesto a votación una resolución para prohibir la contratación de trabajadores indocumentados a todos aquellas empresas que trabajan con la ciudad.

Una resolución que entre otras cosas no goza de base legal, ya que un condado no puede escribir sus propias leyes de inmigración, un caso parecido ocurrió en Escondido y después de gastar 90.000 dólares en gastos legales, la ciudad tuvo que retirar su proyecto por anti constitucional. La realidad, es que los empresarios temerosos de que les pongan una multa, podrían empezar a no contratar inmigrantes lo que es un acto de discriminado penalizado por la ley. La votación esta fechada para el próximo 14 de mayo.

Muchos preguntan, ¿Que debo saber sobre las redadas?

Un resumen sobre algunos consejos prácticos obtenidos del Centro Nacional de apoyo Legal Migratorio:

1. Permanezcan callados o informen que deseen estar en silencio
2. Pedir hablar con un abogado
3. Nunca lleve documentos falsos consigo
4. Averigüe un abogado de inmigración de su agrado y lleve su teléfono siempre consigo
5. Preaparar un documento que autorice a otro adulto con el cuidado de sus hijos menores
6. Aconsejar a sus allegados que no deseen ser interrogados por la ICE que no se acerquen al sitio donde se llevo la redada o donde esta detenido.
7. NO FIRMAR NINGUN DOCUMENTO SIN ANTES CONSULTAR CON UN ABOGADO

En la próxima semana les informaremos de varias propuestas  y proyectos que la Union de Trabajadores Inmigrantes esta trabajando, entre ellas, el club juvenil de la UTI, un concierto gratis por los derechos de los inmigrantes el próximo 2 de Junio, varias propuestas pro inmigrantes en la ciudad. La Unión de Trabajadores Inmigrantes es una organización de inmigrantes para inmigrantes que defiende los derechos de trabajadores e inmigrantes en todo el condado de Dane. Madison WI.

May Day in Madison Wi has been just great. More than 3000 people gather together at the Capital.

Since today the march was just the opposite direction (From the Capital to the Park) a lot of people choose to park around the BrittingHam Park and walk in perfect sunny May Day. Around 12:45PM thousands of people gather together to ask for a  fully immigration reform.

At 12:50pm Rosalba Rodriguez and Clarissa Pearson both worker from Madison, Wi read the statement of the march in English and Spanish.

Right after a very an enthusiastic support to the speech, the march started at the capital to the park. A mile and half walk, no incident occurred.

At the arrival to the park, music, food and beverages was awaiting to the marchers. About 1200 meals and literally hundreds of waters and sodas kept the crowd happy and fed while an open mic and music complete a great community picnic where different races and nationalities celebrate a wonderful May Day!

More than 30 stores in the Latino community closed for at least the hours of the march (12pm to 4pm) and effectively joint forces to feed the large crowd.

At the end of the event, organizers and activist reported a great balance.

On one hand, thousands of people on the streets, giving that Madison is not such a big city became part of the National Movement once again. And in the other hand and thanks to the community picnic, we accomplished another milestone in the project to create stronger grassroots efforts to organize the community!

On the question of why demonstration size did not reach last year mark, we say there are two major factors: The terrorist campaign of ICE and the government increasing to historic records the number of raids and in the other hand the clear division among some leaders in the immigrant movement.

The lack of unity in the community has broken a unified message that has been transmitted through the mass media weakening the confidence of major layers of the undocumented immigrants.

Today, we can see that besides all the obstacles, thousands if not millions of undocumented and supporters came back to the streets again.

Undocumented workers in this country are learning the hard way that the biggest task today is to build massive organizations.

Despite the huge political limitations (working from sun up to sun down, and the constant risk to be deported) immigrant workers need to be organized and have an independent grassroots organization. We believe that the organization in Madison is UTI Immigrant Workers Union.
